Business
This page tells you, in business language, how the metrics you define over your datasets are moving, such as revenue or orders. Each insight separates what changed in the business from what coincides with open problems in the data of the sources.
What you can do
- Define a metric: Name, Aggregation (sum of values, row count, distinct count or average of values), Unit (euros, customers, count or number), Period (per day or per week) and, for each source, the Dataset, the Date column, the Value column and, for sum and count, an optional Segment. Sum and count accept up to 5 sources; average and distinct count do not split by segment or combine sources. The columns come from the dataset profile: the Date column must have a date or date-and-time type, and sum and average need a numeric Value column. A column with personal or confidential data cannot be the Segment, the date or the value of a sum or average; a distinct count accepts it. Only datasets from PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Fabric, Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks and SQLite compute metrics.
- Read the summary of each metric: the last complete period against the previous one, the change, where it is (segment and source, for sum and count) and whether it is usual for the period (the same weekday or the last few weeks).
- See the label of each insight: Change without data problems, Check the data (most of the change is in sources with open problems in the data), Partly in the data, Usual for the period, Stable or Awaiting update (some source has not computed the last period yet; the value appears after the next scan).
- Open the Evidence: the source datasets, the open problems in the data of each and the query that ran on the source, read-only; and the Values per period in a table.
- See the value in euros or the customers in rows with quality problems, when the metric is in euros or customers and the source has rules failing in the last scan.
- When defining a metric, pick an approved Registered definition: the name and description become the definition's, also after each new version, and the Aggregation and Period must match its reference formula and grain.
- Register the Metric definitions, one per metric: the Business definition, the Reference formula, the Filters, the Grain, the Owner, the Definition authority and the Source datasets. A draft can be edited freely, and Submit for approval opens a request decided in My tasks (the requester does not decide). On an approved definition, Propose change goes to approval, and the version in force stays until then. The definition authority signs, and the requester or an admin can Withdraw request.
- Open a definition to see the Implementations (the dbt metrics with the same name and the business metrics that follow it), each one Conforms or Diverges, with the registered and the implemented value, and the Version history with the signatures of each version. A divergence also opens a metric problem in Issues.
- If you are an admin, use Import from dbt to create drafts of the dbt semantic layer metrics already imported that are not in the registry yet.
- Use Analyse now to request a scan of the sources (values are computed on every scan) and, if you are an admin, choose the workspace email, Slack or Teams channels and the frequency of the periodic summary, or Send now.
